:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jean Nezmars -- Zizek's pickled brain in a vat : As always I start my reading from the rear (i.e., Zizek in rear view), in this case the inner fold of the 2020 Bloomsbury edition of Zizek’s Hegel in a Wired Brain, which presents us with the following accolades: “No ordinary study of Hegel,” and “Zizek connects Hegel to the world we live in now,” and again more boldly “why the 21st century might just be Hegelian.” These soundbites should be a surprise (to any attentive reader) given as early as page 12, Zizek warns us that the book is NOT a study of Hegel. So, is the empty set (not a study) the extra-ordinary set, i.e., the one that contains the null set (the void) in its membership (recall Marx, Groucho that is, regarding membership)? It appears the inner fold is already playing with the Cantor/Gödel rupture which Zizek will soon announce as the discourse/figure of our times. And what about the promised connection with the world we live in. A 404 error? Hard to say given the reception (low bar). For the connection is framed in the conditional: What if? As such it is a hypothetical relationship, like an imaginary friend on Facebook. Zizek asks: “Again, what if Hegel allows a better (proper) understanding of precisely those phenomena which are distinctly post-Hegelian, which stand for what ‘Hegel couldn’t imagine”? (Pg. 2). I don't know why this is the case with his books, but many of them are printed in small font making it harder for older chaps like myself to read.
